How does building a green and high performance home help you?

DJK is committed to building homes that function as a complete system. Our advanced building methods lead to energy savings, healthy living environments, money savings, and reduced environmental impact and carbon emissions.

DJK Homes is proud to offer new homes that have earned the ENERGY STAR label. The ENERGY STAR label means that your new home has been designed and built to standards well above other homes in the market today. It means better quality, better comfort, and better durability. It also means that your new home is a better value for today, and a better investment for tomorrow. The ENERGY STAR label gives you the peace of mind that your home has undergone a better process for inspections, testing, and verification to ensure that it meets strict requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Home Site Management & Waste Reduction

Proper planning is essential when building a home with the environmental impact and conservation in mind. We work hard to reduce construction waste. Our advanced building methods work to keep waste to a minimum, however there is still some waste generated during the construction process. The waste that is generated is hauled off site and sorted for all recyclable materials. Some ways we preserve home sites and reduce construction waste are:

  • Advanced planning and measuring for reduction in waste material
  • Preserve and protect healthy trees present on the property
  • Reuse of concrete forms
  • Sorting and recycling of scrap building materials
  • Silt fencing installed where needed to prevent from erosion
Energy Efficiency

The savings on energy bills that result from building an energy efficient home are immense. We build our homes to perform better than other homes on the market. It takes a lot of work to build energy efficient home right but we have seen the rewards and it is all worth it. Here are some important aspects of our energy efficient homes:

  • DOW Styrofoam insulation board on exterior walls creates a barrier between indoor and outdoor temperatures
  • Elastomeric sealant picture framing process on exterior stud wall cavities prevents air leakage and energy loss
  • Blown in cellulose insulation in the walls and attic provides high insulation value and sound deadening qualities
  • DOW Styrofoam insulation board or interior basement wall insulation prevents energy loss through your basement, where 22% of energy loss occurs
  • Properly sized high efficient gas furnaces and 16 SEER a/c units with ducted and sealed supply and returns to prevent duct leakage and provide efficient heating and cooling
  • Zone programmable thermostat helps regulate temperature and control energy waste
  • 50 gallon power vent high efficiency water heater uses less energy
  • Low-E, argon filled glass in windows controls heat transfer while still allowing visible light to pass through
  • ENERGY STAR approved appliance packages reduce the energy used for cooking, cleaning, and food storage
  • CFL lighting in our homes consumes only a fifth of the power as typical incandescent bulbs while producing far less heat
  • Roof mounted ventilation system regulated attic temperature and increase attic ventilation
Renewable Energy

DJK Custom Homes has partnered with one of the area's leading solar installers, Independence Renewable Energy. As a team, DJK Custom Homes and Independence Renewable Energy are able to bring Solar PV and Solar Thermal energy to our new custom homes. DJK has built the first Net-Zero Home in Naperville with the DJK Eco-Smart Home reaching an impressive HERS Score of 10. DJK Homes will be launching the next Eco-Smart Project the Spring of 2016 which will have a projected goal of reaching a HERS Score of 0 or below.

Water Efficiency

DJK Strives to conserve water in all of the homes that we build. We achieve this through multiple avenues including the following.

  • ENERGY STAR approved dishwashers use less water
  • Regionally appropriate trees and plants require less watering
  • Low flow volume faucets use less water while still maintaining pressure
  • Water efficient toilets use less water per flush
Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is one of the most important focuses on every home we build. Many people are not aware of the poor air quality that may exist indoors very easily. We take many steps to produce the absolute best healthy indoor air quality in our homes.

  • Frequent on-site meetings during the entire construction process to understand what is behind the walls and how the home is constructed
  • Pre-closing home walk through with project manager to familiarize you with your new home
  • Online education center, eBooks, and frequent blog posts
