Keeping Your Bathroom Simple and Stylish

Categories: New Design Trends | Tags: , , ,

Contributing Author:  Craig Middleton

master bathWhen it comes to resale, the two most important rooms in your home are the kitchen and bathroom. You receive your biggest return on investment from either a bathroom or kitchen remodel, and they are the two key factors that a buyer will consider when deciding if they will purchase your home. Your bathroom should be your oasis, your getaway, your place to rest and relax. Creating a chic and timeless look for your space is easily achievable, but you should keep a few guiding principles in mind.

Overall Color Scheme
Color scheme is an extremely important factor when it comes to a remodel, and we aren’t just referring to paint color. Choosing neutrals for every aspect of your bathroom will ensure that future paint and restyling choices are plentiful. Gray, brown, beige, and white tones are great choices for tile, flooring, trim, and vanities. Potential, future home buyers can envision updating these neutral spaces with their own style and color preferences. You can always bring in a pop of color with an accent wall, which can be easily changed in the event that you decide to sell your home. Keeping the walls neutral and cohesive with a monochromatic palette will promote a stylish and calming energy.

Fixture and Hardware Choices
There are more options for fixture finishes than ever before, but using a consistent finish throughout your space is important for maintaining a simple and stylish look. Polished chrome, brushed bronze, brushed nickel, and satin black are just a few of the choices that are available for hardware and fixture finishes. Polished chrome is one of the most traditional and timeless finishes available, while satin black will match well with almost any design style and color palette you can imagine. Aged or antiqued brass has made a recent comeback in the design world. While it isn’t the first choice for many, it is timeless look that has been used for centuries. The most important tip to remember is consistency. Choose a fixture finish, and use it throughout the space. Don’t choose one finish for your sink faucet and another for your shower head and fixtures. The uniformity of a single finish ensures beautiful simplicity.

From flooring to shower tiles, surface choices can make or break a bathroom design. Choosing your color scheme before considering surface choices is a good place to start. For example, Carrara marble goes well with a gray and/or white color scheme. Carrara is also one of the most traditional and timeless choices when it comes to bathroom surfaces. This versatile stone can be utilized for your vanity top, shower tiles, and even flooring. It’s also one of the most luxurious and chic surfaces you can choose. You’ll never need to replace Carrara, which will stand the test of design time! Another surface that is important is your shower glass. Shower curtains are no longer in vogue, and who wants to cover up that beautiful Carrara marble? Glass shower panels can also be utilized to create a steam shower.

If you’ve ever been to a spa, you know that the perfect amount of lighting is required for a serene environment. Too much light, and it’s impossible to relax. Too little light, and there is no way to do your makeup or hair at the vanity. One solution is to install separate lighting over the vanity and the rest of the bathroom. When you want to relax, you can leave the vanity lighting off. Installing a light dimming system is also a great way to set your lighting according to your mood.

Creating a beautiful bathroom can feel like a complicated chore; however, anyone can achieve a timeless look. Just remember to combine a neutral color pallet with a single fixture choice, beautiful surfaces, and perfect mood lighting, and you will have a bathroom that is both polished and sleek.

DJK Homes Eco-Smart Home Receives Zero Energy Capable Designation

Categories: DJK News, Eco Smart Home | Tags: , , , ,

The DJK Team in front of our beautiful Grand Teton Eco-Smart Home in Naperville, IL along with the prestigious GreenHome Institute Zero Energy Capable designation

We are proud to announce that our Grand Teton Eco-Smart Home in Naperville, IL has achieved Green Home Institute’s Zero Energy Capable designation. In order to achieve this prestigious designation the home had gone thru a very intensive process from the early stages of designing the home through the entire construction process of the home in order to achieve zero energy capabilities over the course of a year following the completion.

The Grand Teton Eco-Smart Home had been the first of its kind in the Naperville area in 2014, as well as the first LEED Platinum home to be certified in Naperville.

This very intensive process involved partnering with Green Home Institute to prepare full project documentation prior to and following the construction of the home, in order to achieve LEED Platinum certification. Our team also had to schedule onsite inspections and performance testing with a Green Rater and HERS Rater during various stages of construction to ensure that the home adhered to the integrity of the LEED for homes program. The strength of LEED for Homes is the overall third party verification provided by GHI that involves the required inspections and testing to achieve LEED.

Why new homebuyers may choose to build a new home toward being LEED qualified?

A home is not sustainable if it is not energy efficient, healthy, and durable. LEED-certified homes are designed to maximize fresh air indoors and minimize exposure to airborne toxins and pollutants. They’re also designed to save costly resources that involve your home’s energy and water usages. On average LEED-certified homes use 20%-30% less – with some homes reporting up to 60% less energy use – than a home built to code. Using fewer resources means lower utility bills each month. Every home is third party inspected, performance-tested, and certified to perform better than a traditional home. Green homes are also resold for more money in less time than traditional homes.

Building Smart & High Performance Homes

Some new homebuyers that may love the idea of building a home that is LEED certified, may not love the additional cost that is associated to certifying their home… We would like to remind everyone that every new DJK homes are built with the highest integrity in mind to outperform the standard code to building a new home. Each and everyone of our homes are built to provide energy efficiency, comfort, and health in mind with third-party verification.

Best Places To Find Inspiration For Your New Home or Next Remodeling Project

Categories: Home Owner Tips, New Design Trends, Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , ,

Whether you have a knack for design or you have no idea where to start when designing the perfect space in your home there are two sharing sites that continue to inspire homeowners during the process of designing their new home or updating their current home and these are: Houzz and Pinterest. pinterest-logo

Trying to describe the perfect kitchen of your dreams to a home builder or remodeler by expressing only through words poses a challenge to many homeowners. With Houzz and Pinterest homeowners are able to express their style and inspiration much easier through a collection of photos that show different colors, door styles, flooring options, lighting, tile choices, and brick or stone samples.

Houzz and Pinterest continue to grow and become an even more valuable resource to the home building and  remodeling industry. According to Houzz, there are nearly 35 million unique monthly users on Houzz and millions of photos in their entire photo stream database. But that’s not where all the fun ends for homeowners that are looking to design the perfect living space in their home by incorporating different styles and materials, as Houzz users can efficiently search through the database of photos for different styles, products, and materials that have been incorporated in a project in a different part of the world and narrow down the search results as they go.

While it may sound intimidating at first to create your own “Ideabook” on Houzz or “Board” on Pinterest since there are millions of photos of ideas loaded to each site with different inspirations, we see more and more new clients already have their collections of Ideabooks and Boards already created. During everyone of our design meetings we encourage all of our clients to create their own collection of design inspiration on Houzz or Pinterest and to share them with our team, so that we can communicate and collaborate different styles, products, colors, and materials more efficiently.

One more important thing to add about Houzz is that past clients are able to provide credible reviews of professionals that they have worked with, so that other potential clients can see the quality of the professionals work and read about the quality of their services all in one place.

Whether you are looking to build a new home or updating your current home we encourage everyone to explore the vast array of design inspirations found on Houzz and Pinterest.
