Go Green This Summer Following These Tips!

Categories: Eco Smart Home, Home Owner Tips | Tags: , , , , ,

We have come up with 5 Simple Ways That You Can Achieve An Even Greener and Sustainable Lifestyle this Summer!

1. Electricity– Unplug electric devices that you’re no longer using. If your cell phone has finished charging, unplug it. If you’re not using the lights in a room or your computer (etc.) then turn them off. Even devices not in use that remain plugged in, can still soak up unnecessary electricity. After a month or so, check your electric bill. You may be surprised about how much money you’re saving by doing these simple tasks.

2. Plastic Bags– If you haven’t already gotten one, pick up some fabric reusable grocery bags. Through the simple act of bringing your own bag, you’re saving however many hundreds of bags from being deposited in landfills. For your existing plastic grocery bags, consider using them as garbage bags around your home. At the very least, see if there’s any plastic bag drop-off recycling centers in your area.

3. Water– Cumulatively, our nation spends much more on water than we do on electricity. Don’t’ leave your sink running if you’re brushing your teeth or shaving, etc. If you have a leaky faucet, get it fixed. Instead of taking baths, take showers instead. In the same way with electricity, do this for a month or so and then check your water bill. You’ll be surprised how much money you’re saving. There are also many Manufacturer’s that are releasing Low Flow Faucets, Shower Heads, and Toilets, as well as Plumbing or Touch

4. Transportation – Try to carpool with a nearby co-worker to reduce emissions. If possible, take advantage of public transportation. Consider purchasing and using an electric or hybrid vehicle. Also, be mindful of how often you accelerate. Vehicles use more gas to speed up than they do to move at a consistent speed.

5. Grow Something – Consider growing some of those wonderful fruits, vegetables, and herbs you get from the grocery store. You may also consider planting more Plants that are more Native to your area. By planting Native Plants in your yard, you will see that it takes a lot less effort for the plant to thrive and become established. Even a small garden can provide you with a tasty, healthy, and creative source that will add an organic aesthetic to your home, as well as taking some money off your grocery (and possibly gas) bill.

If you’re looking for ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle we hope that these simple and quick tips inspire you to get started.

If you would like to learn more on how you can achieve and live an even more sustainable life by building a new home with DJK Custom Homes that will include Sustainable, Healthy, and Efficient features that will achieve savings up to 50% or more from what you are currently spending in utilities, please give us a call at 630-369-1953, or visit our Model Homes located in Plainfield, IL to speak to one of our staff members.

6 Popular Garage Storage Solutions

Categories: Design and Details, New Homes in Naperville, Plainfield new homes | Tags: , ,

We may not think about it often, but our garages play a very big role in our everyday lives. Of course, they protect our vehicles from the elements. But more often than not, they also become a dumping grounds for tools, cleaning products, and seasonal gear. We have come up with a list of smart storage solutions can help you eliminate clutter and keep your garage organized.

1. Shoe Storage.
To enter your home 9 out of 10 times you are entering through the garage. If shoes are not allowed to be worn into your home, this is a great place for them to pile up. A shoe organizer that is built in can instantly clear the floor.

2. A multipurpose bench.
Offered as a standard feature in our homes in the mudroom next to the garage door keeps outdoor gear tidy. A Lower cozy bench seat and lower cubbies make it easy for kids to remember to take off their coats, caps, and gloves when they come inside.

3. A garage loft.

High garage ceilings are a great solution to free up storage space in tighter garages, as shown in this garage. The pictured loft almost acts s like an attic with a low-clearance ceiling height and retractable ladder.

4. A slat wall system

Working away from the traditional hung pegboards. The slat wall system may often be seen in retail stores to keep their merchandise off the floor but within reach. The type of system can be installed in your garage wth different hooks and shelves to fit into horizontal slats, making for a customized storage center with minimal effort. The hooks for this type of system can hold anything from skis to toys to lawn chairs to lawn care

5. Custom Built-In Cabinetry.
Custom built-in cabinets are totally worth the cost if you can swing it. The wall to wall and floor ceiling cabinetry make it easy to keep everything tidy. It is the most costly but Custom built-in cabinets, drawers, and shelves can help you clear clutter and stay organized.

6. Car Lift.
A car lift offers the ability to store an additional veicle, often a sports car or off road sport utility vehicle without sacrificing any floor space in the garage or having to add an additional garage bay area that may be limited to any given homesite.

Architectural Elements To Create Your Very Own Modern Farmhouse

Categories: Design and Details, Home Owner Tips, New Design Trends | Tags: , ,

Modern Farm House style homes have been receiving a lot of buzz lately. It’s a style that has been inspired by a classic vernacular style. Taking elements from the original period architecture, mixing them up and giving them a twist or two to turn them into something new and modern for this day and age. We had the opportunity to build a Modern Farm House style home in Naperville, IL that included solar and high level green designations including LEED Platinum level, NAHB Green Emerald, and EPA Indoor Air Plus.

1. The Front Porch.
The front porch is a key aesthetic to complementing the Farm House style. With any Modern Farm House designed home the front porch is taken and given a different spin to give it Whether it spans the entire front elevation, wraps around, or is small and enclosed on three sides, the front porch is a welcoming farmhouse touch. The overhangs on the front porch, depending on the front orientation of the home allows for keeping direct sunlight out.

2. Barn style lighting.
Gooseneck lamps and other barn-style lighting bring the look of the home together. The simplicity of barn-style lighting fits perfectly with the modern style that you are looking to accomplish.

3. Metal roof.
The metal roof is one of the most durable roofing materials that money can buy. The metal roof also brings the original farmhouse style through its streamlined design that is just right to give the home an updated farmhouse look.

4. Shaker-style cabinetry.
The shaker profile has a classic simplicity thtat fits right in with just about every design style, from traditional to contemporary and modern style with no exception. The clean simple lines and straightforward boxy profiles are just right for a modern farmhouse.

5. Barn doors.
Without a doubt one of the most popular trends for homes that shows no sign of slowing down. The barn sliding doors can be incorporated in almost any space.

6. Exposed beams.
In a room with vaulted ceilings, exposed beam details ties in the barn look. By adding reclaimed beams from a barn give the home a sense of age and history in the modern farmhouse mix.

7. Wide plank floors.
Wide plank floors set the modern farmhouse style apart by providing nice and wide floorboards that would be found in a barn. There are many ventures that salvage these types of floors from old building that are planned demolition.

8. Farmhouse Sink.
The farmhouse sink adds a feeling of nostalgia to a kitchen through it’s sense of character and rustic character. There are redesigned versions from the traditional farmhouse sink. Farmhouse sinks are great for washing big items, but it also means you will need a lot more water to fill it than your typical sink.

9. Tongue and Groove Paneling, shiplap, and butt boards.

A classic farmhouse would not have drywall. These types of wall treatments add a fun and unique homey texture to the walls. They also offer a more modern look when painted white.

If you are in the market to update your current home or incorporate the Modern Farm House style into your current, we would love for the opportunity to help you with the design!

Keeping Your Bathroom Simple and Stylish

Categories: New Design Trends | Tags: , , ,

Contributing Author:  Craig Middleton

master bathWhen it comes to resale, the two most important rooms in your home are the kitchen and bathroom. You receive your biggest return on investment from either a bathroom or kitchen remodel, and they are the two key factors that a buyer will consider when deciding if they will purchase your home. Your bathroom should be your oasis, your getaway, your place to rest and relax. Creating a chic and timeless look for your space is easily achievable, but you should keep a few guiding principles in mind.

Overall Color Scheme
Color scheme is an extremely important factor when it comes to a remodel, and we aren’t just referring to paint color. Choosing neutrals for every aspect of your bathroom will ensure that future paint and restyling choices are plentiful. Gray, brown, beige, and white tones are great choices for tile, flooring, trim, and vanities. Potential, future home buyers can envision updating these neutral spaces with their own style and color preferences. You can always bring in a pop of color with an accent wall, which can be easily changed in the event that you decide to sell your home. Keeping the walls neutral and cohesive with a monochromatic palette will promote a stylish and calming energy.

Fixture and Hardware Choices
There are more options for fixture finishes than ever before, but using a consistent finish throughout your space is important for maintaining a simple and stylish look. Polished chrome, brushed bronze, brushed nickel, and satin black are just a few of the choices that are available for hardware and fixture finishes. Polished chrome is one of the most traditional and timeless finishes available, while satin black will match well with almost any design style and color palette you can imagine. Aged or antiqued brass has made a recent comeback in the design world. While it isn’t the first choice for many, it is timeless look that has been used for centuries. The most important tip to remember is consistency. Choose a fixture finish, and use it throughout the space. Don’t choose one finish for your sink faucet and another for your shower head and fixtures. The uniformity of a single finish ensures beautiful simplicity.

Surfaces
From flooring to shower tiles, surface choices can make or break a bathroom design. Choosing your color scheme before considering surface choices is a good place to start. For example, Carrara marble goes well with a gray and/or white color scheme. Carrara is also one of the most traditional and timeless choices when it comes to bathroom surfaces. This versatile stone can be utilized for your vanity top, shower tiles, and even flooring. It’s also one of the most luxurious and chic surfaces you can choose. You’ll never need to replace Carrara, which will stand the test of design time! Another surface that is important is your shower glass. Shower curtains are no longer in vogue, and who wants to cover up that beautiful Carrara marble? Glass shower panels can also be utilized to create a steam shower.

Lighting
If you’ve ever been to a spa, you know that the perfect amount of lighting is required for a serene environment. Too much light, and it’s impossible to relax. Too little light, and there is no way to do your makeup or hair at the vanity. One solution is to install separate lighting over the vanity and the rest of the bathroom. When you want to relax, you can leave the vanity lighting off. Installing a light dimming system is also a great way to set your lighting according to your mood.

Creating a beautiful bathroom can feel like a complicated chore; however, anyone can achieve a timeless look. Just remember to combine a neutral color pallet with a single fixture choice, beautiful surfaces, and perfect mood lighting, and you will have a bathroom that is both polished and sleek.
